The last movies I remember that starred these artists are from my childhood, all of which are on the action and drama genres. I saw a resurrection of veteran actors and actresses. I felt the anger so much I couldn’t help but laugh at his outburst.Īnother thing that gave this movie a special place in my list of best movies is the cast. I think no curse word could ever equal it in intensity, and I felt that way the entire movie. It conveyed all the anger and frustration John Arcilla’s Antonio Luna felt. I loved the way Putang Ina was used throughout the movie. (Uniting a divided nation is such a difficult job, Joven) Malaking trabaho ang ipagkaisa ang bansang watak-watak, Joven. Are we then any different from them? Don’t we have the right to be free?) (The Americans know why we fight for our independence for they too have bravely fought for theirs. Iba ba tayo sa kanila? Wala ba tayong karapatang mabuhay nang malaya? I’d like to share a few of my favorites here, which could be heard on separete times when Antonio Luna was conversing with Joven, the young journalist in the film.Īlam ng mga Amerikano kung bakit natin ipinaglalaban ang ating kasarinlan dahil buong tapang at buong bangis rin nilang ipinaglaban ang sa kanila. But it wasn’t all comedy for many of the movie’s lines could awaken patriotic sentiments. They reflected the talents of its writers and effectively used slapstick and dark humor. The hugot lines in the movie were so quotable. “Ingles-inglesin mo ko sa bayan ko?! Punyeta!” I can’t help but feel proud that I understood what they were all saying and that finally the subtitles weren’t intended for me but were for viewers who are unfortunate enough to not have learned my mother tongue. It’s nice to watch at last a Filipino movie that uses the Filipino language in all its beauty. And who would ever forget him saying, “ Heneral, bibili po ba kayo ng manok?” I still picture him informing the general that they are ready, while standing by the door of the kamalig na nagtitinga (removing food stuck to his teeth using his tongue). I really enjoyed Archie Alemania’s slapstick performance. It’s the gestures that are silly and uniquely Filipino, the lines that are designed to appear unintentionally funny, and the unfortunate scenes that are comically portrayed. I don’t know if foreign viewers could have appreciated it, but it’s in a sort of deprecating way we Filipinos see ourselves and being able to laugh about it at the same time. They were unruly and unorganized, ironically reminiscent of the times when the present Philippine congress has been chaotic.įilipino humor was also an element that was constantly present and appropriately highlighted. In scenes where several of the famous names in Philippine History during Emilio Aguinaldo’s presidency were having their meetings, you can observe their hot headedness and the swiftness by which they react to provocation. Even from the very beginning, we are introduced to General Antonio Luna’s explosive temper, but it wasn’t only him. Heneral Luna, the film, perfectly captured what Filipino temper and humor is. General Antonio Luna is the Manila-born Ilocano who was among the Ilustrados that took part on the Propaganda Movement during the Spanish Colonial Era and who eventually became the commanding officer of the Philippine Revolutionary Army. Heneral Luna is an epic biographical film set during the time of the Philippine-American War, after Spain surrendered to America (or in other accounts, after the Philippines was sold to the United States). Gripping scenes, emotional lines, punchlines with perfect timing – this is a movie that shall leave a mark for decades. Finally after years, here is a movie every Filipino would be proud of. It is an interactivity tool that can, within its limits, reflect the interests of online readers. It felt like rain after a long drought. Produced by Artikulo Uno Productions, “Heneral Luna” breached the P150-million mark in box office as of Wednesday despite initial fears that it would be pulled out early in cinemas to give way to foreign and more mainstream local films. A total of 116 respondents answered “none of the above.” In a similar poll conducted by Line which gathered 465 votes, respondents deemed the quote “Kaya nating magbuwis ng buhay para sa pamilya pero para sa isang prinsipyong makabayan?” as the most striking (116 votes), followed by “Negosyo o kalayaan? Bayan o sarili, pumili ka!” (114 votes) “Ang taong may damdamin ay hindi alipin,” (82 votes) and “Wala ba tayong karapatang mabuhay nang malaya?” (37 votes).
